History

Cune was founded in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers, who for 140 years have continued to put effort and hard work into the winery to make it a unique, artisanal and international winery. The fifth generation of the family is still at the helm of the company, with a clear objective that has been maintained from the beginning: to produce and age quality wines for their consumers.

In 1894, the Compañía de Vinos del Norte de España (C.V.N.E.) won the grand prize for the quality of its wines at the Antwerp World Expo. A year later, thanks to the recognition given to CVNE, it was awarded a place on the jury of the Universal Exhibition in Bordeaux.

In 1915, Monopole was created, the oldest white wine brand in Spain, with a pale, young, fresh and fruity character that marked a before and after in the history of the renowned winery.

A few years later, five years to be precise, Viña Real was launched on the market and Imperial saw the light of day. Viña Real is a wine that perfectly combines the character and personality of Rioja in a balanced way, thanks to an extraordinary ageing process.

As for Imperial, it became a great wine with national and international recognition. The most representative of the winery since then. Its name, like everything in CVNE, has a reason. It is due to the bottlings that were used in the English market, whose name was "Pinta Imperial".

In 1940, a concrete winemaking hall began to be used, the first in La Rioja. As an interesting fact, it is still 100% useful today. This innovative system has many benefits for the production of exquisite wines.

In 1979, CVNE turned 100 years old, and to celebrate, the great chef Paul Bocuse and his chef, Juan María Arzak, inaugurated the "Casa Jardín".

On 12 October, in 1989, the "El Pilar" warehouse was inaugurated. It is so named because of the day on which it was inaugurated. The peculiarity of this winemaking hall is that it is not aggressive, as gravity is used to transport the must in Spain.

CVNE was a pioneer in this practice, which today is also used by many other wineries in Spain.

In 2004, the company created a new winery called Nueva Bodega Viña Real. The inauguration of this winery was attended by celebrities such as the emeritus King Juan Carlos I, which shows the importance and reputation of CVNE.

The new winery was an architectural jewel, located on the Cerro de Mesa in Laguardia, and one of the most technologically advanced in the world.

In 2006, CVNE tried an experiment with the aim of improving quality, planting twice as many vines per hectare. It was a great success, as the same fight between vines caused the grapes to grow with superior quality.

The year 2013 arrives with several successes. Imperial is named best wine in the world and Cune Crianza achieves the double environmental footprint.

Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 was ranked first in the Top 100 Wine ranking of the American magazine Wine Spectator, a prestigious wine magazine. Moreover, it makes history, as never before had a Spanish wine managed to position itself as number 1 worldwide.

In order to measure the impact on CO2 and water consumption when producing wine, the winery calculated the carbon and water footprint of Cune Crianza, thus becoming the first winery in Spain to achieve the Double Environmental Footprint.

In 2015, the oldest white wine brand in Spain, Monopole, which is part of CVNE, celebrates 100 years of history, a brand that is committed to the quality of its products in every bottle.

Also in this year, CVNE wins the "International Wine & Spirits Competition" for Best Wine Producer in Spain.

Two years later, in 2017, Roger Goulart became part of the CVNE family. Roger Goulart was founded in 1882, and is located in the Penedés region, in Sant Esteve de Sesrovires. It is a pioneer in the production of sparkling wine in Spain using the traditional method. It is highly regarded for producing Cava and is a specialist in Grandes Reservas.

The following year, in 2018, CVNE acquired Virgen del Galir, which was founded in 2002 in a village in Orense, Éntoma, Valdeorras Designation of Origin.

2019 is a special year for CVNE. It celebrates 140 years of experience and history and, to mark the occasion, Bela is born and CVNE acquires Castillo Davalillo.

Present

The illusion of Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa remains intact thanks to the fifth generation of the family, which has a common goal with both of them, to make the best wines in Spain and make their country shine around the world.

For this reason, this year the winery is expanding its facilities, making a commitment to its grand reserves, whites and rosés.

The birth of Bela is a historic event for CVNE, which is making its way in Ribera del Duero, merging its years of experience and good work with the great lands of this Designation of Origin.

Bela contains magic and history. Its label is a facsimile of a CVNE from 1910. Its design features three stars, alluding to the sons of the co-founder of CVNE, Eusebio Real de Asúa. One of the stars is that of Sofía, from whom this generation of the family descends and who was known as Bela, who gives her name to this very special wine.

In 2020, Imperial turns 100 years old, a classic born in the 1920s that has become one of Spain's great wines. Its production is reserved exclusively for when the company determines that the harvest has been truly extraordinary.

This wine, in its 100 years of history, is an icon for wine enthusiasts, which is recognised around the globe and has become an ambassador for Spain.

CVNE, today consists of the wineries: CVNE, Imperial, Viña Real and Viñedos del Contino.
