Origin

Bacardi was founded on 4 February 1862 by Don Facundo Bacardi Massó in the city of Santiago de Cuba. He bought a not very big distillery, which would revolutionise the way rum was made, obtaining a light and smooth distillate, which is still the Bacardi we know today.

One day, while observing the sky, Doña Amalia noticed a colony of bats that were perched on the beams of the distillery. For the Taino Indians, Cubans and Spaniards, these animals represented good health, family unity and fortune. It was for this reason that the bat was adopted as the symbol of the brand, being known among the local people as "el ron del murciélago" (the rum of the bat).

Don Facundo's son planted a coconut tree in front of the newly acquired distillery, which was affectionately called "El Coco". It became a symbol as it overcame fire, hurricanes and earthquakes, representing Bacardi's strength and resilience.

Bacardi became a very popular rum, gaining great recognition for its quality, winning the gold medal at the Barcelona Universal Exposition and being named Purveyor to the Royal House of Spain, as it became the favourite rum of celebrities.

The original company from Santiago de Cuba makes history by being the first Cuban multinational to also operate in Barcelona, bottling its products outside its country of origin for the first time. The same happens a little later, but in New York City, in the United States.

Later, the well-known "dry law" took place in this country, which, by prohibiting the manufacture and sale of alcoholic products, forced Bacardi to close its bottling plant in the territory.

Far from collapsing, the company created a campaign boasting Cuba as a place to forget about the US dry law and enjoy its products there. It immediately had an effect on the public, who flocked to the island to enjoy a good rum. This, in addition to the cocktail culture, makes the brand grow like wildfire.

For strategic purposes, Bacardi International Limited moves to the Bahamas, in order to act as an economic bridge between Europe and the United States. It was only the beginning of a successful era.

In 1979, Bacardi achieved worldwide sales of some 16 million 9-litre cases, making it the world's number one selling premium spirits brand.

In 2009, the company achieved Triple Crown certification (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001) and became the only spirits company with worldwide certification for all of its facilities, enabling it to operate in compliance with all health, safety, environmental and quality standards.

In 2012, Bacardi celebrates its 150th anniversary, something that few companies achieve, and of course, it celebrates in style.

It currently has the largest rum distillery in the world, located in Puerto Rico. It is also a company committed to the environment, which is why it created the "Good Spirited: Building a sustainable future" initiative.
