History


Ron Barceló's story begins like many others that have happened over the years: an emigration and a lot of hope that your name will be remembered. To know it we have to move to Mallorca in the late 20's of the last century, specifically in 1929.


There lived with his family Julián and Andrés Barceló, two young brothers who were wandering around in their twenties and who, seduced by the siren songs of the New World, decided to pack their bags, leave their loved ones behind and embark on an adventure whose end could not yet be foreseen. In 1929 they arrived in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, and after only one year there they founded their own company, Barceló & Co, with which they would put to the test their hopes of making a rum that would delight the world.


However, success was not immediate. The task, which was mainly in Julián's hands, required a lot of work, many tests, and the elaboration of products that did not have the desired quality, until two decades later, in 1950, Barceló brought out its first two premium rums: Ron Barceló Blanco and Ron Barceló Dorado. From that moment on the distillery took on a new impulse, beginning to be recognized in the world, something that above all happened again 20 years later, in 1974, when the Dominican company showed the world one of its most precious assets: Ron Barceló Añejo. With it, the brand definitively established itself in the world market, being the predecessor of names such as Barceló Imperial or Barceló Platinum, the crown jewels of the Barceló family.

Special Edition Ron Barceló Añejo Fallas 2017


The Fallas is one of the most important festivities in our country, and to honor it Ron Barceló launched in 2017 a double special edition with the participation of two local artists. Carla Fuentes and Malota were chosen by the Dominican company to capture the Valencian spirit reflected in the phrase "Live now".

Thus, in 2017 the San Pedro de Macoría distillery launched a special edition in homage to one of its favourite periods designed by the illustrator ABE THE APE.



Special edition Ron Barceló Carnival of the Canary Islands


Carnivals are celebrated all over the world, but there are some that stand out above the rest: the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, the Cadiz Carnival... and the Canary Islands Carnival. To pay tribute to this Carnival, Ron Barceló Añejo changed his usual clothes and dressed in the best finery provided by the Canary Island illustrator Victor Jaubert, who designed a colourful label so that Barceló would also have a costume during the 2017 carnivals.



Logo and campaigns


For many decades the bottles of the Dominican company have been presided over by a symbolic shield on their top: a fierce lion that protects the prestige of the distillery with its claws. Under this emblem, the letters Ron Barceló could be read in white and on a black background, with a subtitle reflecting the origin of the spirit. However, since 2019 this has changed, as the brand has decided to change its logo with a few but remarkable details. On the one hand, the redistribution of the shield, which can now be seen on the top left of the bottle. And on the other hand, the word rum disappears from the text, leaving only Barceló, this time eliminating the black background. Little changes, but relevant to reach all markets and consumers.



Interesting facts


Unlike many other companies, Ron Barceló's quality is proven by the possession of three certificates which, uniquely, are not in the hands of many. These are the ACR Marque, that is, Authentic Caribbean Rum; Kosher Certification, which has a production that follows the processes stipulated by law; and Empresa Verde, which ensures that Ron Barceló follows the sustainability criteria to the letter.
