History


The birth of Tempos Vega Sicilia took place in 1982 thanks to the Álvarez family, who began by acquiring their well-known winery in Ribera del Duero, to which new companies were added over time.


The family's business project is based on two foundations, one of which is the quality of the product as a guarantee, trying to maintain it consistently year after year. The other, keeping the customer in mind in every activity carried out.


At the beginning of the 21st century, the Álvarez family challenged itself to disembark as soon as possible in La Rioja, in order to offer its select clientele wines from this designation of origin. To achieve this, they teamed up with an easily identifiable name when it comes to French wine, Benjamin Rothschild, who has large wineries in France.


In 2013, the two firms jointly launched Macán, the 2009 vintage of which has gone down in history as the first Vega Sicilia in the Rioja Designation of Origin.


In 2017, the company inaugurated an extraordinary winery in the municipality of Samaniego, which was created by Enrique Johansson, a renowned architect, and whose inauguration was attended by personalities such as Juan Carlos I, King Emeritus of Spain.

These two aforementioned bases, quality and the customer at the centre of its actions, have led the company to grow steadily in terms of production, distribution and the way its works are positioned.


Currently, Tempo Vega Sicilia is made up of 5 companies: Bodegas Vega-Sicilia, Bodegas y Viñedos Alión, Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia, Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia, and, finally, Tojak-Oremus Kft, based in Hungary.


The strategy has been to grow through the creation of new wineries. An average volume of 300,000 litres per winery has been established in order to achieve a good balance between quality and quantity.


Each winery can apply a different model, as in the case of Vega-Sicilia, where three different wines are marketed, unlike, for example, Alión or Pintia, which only make one wine. In this way, each wine is given a unique character and personality.


Currently, the group's wines are marketed in almost 150 countries, and it has approximately 4,500 customers around the world.


Tempos Vega Sicilia has an excellent public image, thanks to the numerous national and international awards and recognitions it receives year after year, in addition to all its appearances in the media around the world.


But if there is one thing that makes Tempo Vega Sicilia recognised at this level, it is undoubtedly the quality of its wines.


Its wineries are located in Valbuena de Duero, in an estate that forms a valley following the water of the river. This is the northern boundary of the 1,000 hectares of the property. The southern boundary is marked by a large forest.


Of the 1,000 hectares, 250 hectares are vineyards, 80% of which are made up of Tinto Fino, and the remaining 20% of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, planted in clay-limestone soils.
