History
JB was born out of a love story, when Giacamo Justerini, an Italian master distiller, fell in love with a famous opera singer, Margherita Bellinu. She did not reciprocate, however, and introduced him to Samuel Johnson, whose nephew would become his partner.
Two generations later, Alfred Brooks' letter "B" was added to the brand name. He bought the company from a Johnson, thus becoming Justerini & Brooks. The expansion of the brand came when Brooks heard about Andrew Usher, an original Edinburgh liquor merchant, who became the first to market a blended whisky.
Some time later, Justerini & Brooks commissioned Usher to produce a whisky with a softer character that would appeal to a new clientele. To achieve this, he enlisted the help of his partner, James Anderson. Together, as a team, they brought JB Club to life as one of Scotland's first whisky blends. They would later acquire the business.
Eddie Tatham, a friend of the Andersons, became part of the company's history. Soon after, thanks to his great charisma, he became a director of JB. In 1929, during Prohibition, Eddie took orders from wealthy customers, jeopardising the creation of JB Rare. He was arrested in Grand Central Station with samples in a suitcase.
When Eddie was released on bail, he had the opportunity to meet Charlie Julian, a great taster, renowned for his extraordinary taste and palate, and his ability to understand the tastes of future consumers. Coinciding with the end of Prohibition, they continue with the creation of the coveted JB rare.
