A Bit of History About Glenkinchie 10 Year Old...
The Glenkinchie distillery is located in the Kinchie Burn valley, near the village of Pencaitland, East Lothian, about 25 kilometers west of Edinburgh. The name Kinchie is likely derived from De Quincy, the original owners of the land.
The distillery was founded in 1825 by brothers John and George Rate, originally named "Milton Distillery," and the brothers changed its name to "Glenkinchie" in 1837. In 1853, John Rate sold the distillery to a farmer named Christie, who converted it into a sawmill. As a result, the distillery remained dormant until 1881 when it was purchased by a consortium from Edinburgh. In 1914, five Lowland distilleries, including Glenkinchie, merged to form Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD); over a decade later, SMD was acquired by Distillers Company Limited. During World War II, Glenkinchie was one of the few distilleries in Scotland that remained in production.
