The word Santero comes from the Spanish word "Santos" which was used in Cuba to refer to the Yoruba religion (Santeria), an African religion that reflected the influence of the Catholic religion and was practiced by black slaves brought to Cuba. They used aguardiente as a drink in the traditional rites of their religion and the "Santero" was the human being who represented the genetic and cultural mix of the various races on this side of the world.
