The story goes that the English privateer, Sir Francis Drake, prepared the first version by mixing brandy, sugar, lemon and mint. This mixture was used to combat stomach ailments, prevent cholera and alleviate the intense heat of the West Indies.

Some years later, around 1860, with the introduction of copper stills, the rum ageing process changed and became more refined, obtaining a better quality drink and this replaced the aguardiente and what was known as "Draquecito" was renamed "Mojito".
