Soft drinks or the tastiest way to quench thirst
From thousands of years ago until relatively recently, humans had only one way to quench thirst: through water. Yes, wine and beer have also existed for many centuries, but when it comes to non-alcoholic beverages that really reduce the overwhelming feeling of being dehydrated, water was our main ally. We delighted in its "warm" passage through our throat, reducing the feeling of dryness that threatened to make us mad.
However, less than two centuries ago the water monopoly was broken into a thousand pieces, and this one had to make room for a competitor that came stepping hard: the soft drink. A drink that, in addition to quenching our thirst, caused a dance of flavors on our palate with a catalog that began with touches of orange, lime or grape, and over the years has come to reach unimaginable delicacies.
Composition of the soft drinks
In the world there are hundreds of types of soft drinks, each one elaborated with a different recipe that differentiates it from the rest of competitors. However, there are several aspects that are common to all soft drinks, and are part of the process of making this type of beverage. First, an essential part of all soft drinks is carbonated water. This is the basis from which other products are added such as sweeteners, acidity stabilisers, colourings, flavourings, preservatives, antioxidants and thickeners.
This does not mean that all soft drinks contain all of these ingredients, but that the vast majority of them commonly use the vast majority of them. From this base, each of the soft drinks that exist in the world are differentiated from the rest by adding juices, purées, disintegrated fruits and vegetables, vitamins ... Everything to get on the podium of those specializing not only in quenching thirst, but in making the process tastier.
As for the varieties that exist, we find two types:
- Soft drinks
- No gas

History of soft drinks
Everything was born in pharmacies at the end of the 18th century. These establishments were the first to make soft drinks, or at least something similar to what we know today as soft drinks, from natural or carbonated water and fruits or sweeteners such as honey. At first, these products were designed to eradicate patient illnesses, but with the passage of time they opened their frontiers until they reached every home in the world, giving rise to beverages such as tonic, soda or cola.
