Vodka, or the purity of a distilled spirit
Some people like distilled drinks with strong flavours, such as smoky whiskies or aromatic gins. However, there is another type of person who is looking for maximum purity and the most neutral taste of alcohol. For this type of person, there is nothing better than a good Vodka.
Its name, coming from the Slavic language, could be translated as "little water" and the first time it was used (at least the first time it is known) was in 1405, in Poland, and it was considered as a medicine.
Composition of Vodka
It could be simplified as much as possible by saying that it is ethanol and water, hence its taste, "tasteless" for some, "pure" for others. Unlike other alcoholic beverages, which always contain some other component besides water and alcohol. It is true that in recent years, a slight "flavouring" has been allowed, following the fashion of gins, but in any case, it is much lighter than in gins.
The idea behind its production was to achieve a drink with a high alcohol concentration, which would prevent it from freezing at temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius. It is produced by fermenting starchy plants such as wheat, rye or potato and its alcohol content can range from 37% to 50%, although the Russian standard is 40%.
Taste of Vodka
Neutral is the word that best describes it. Pure" or "tasteless and odourless", as it was first marketed, would also be appropriate.
But as the UK's Gordon Brown pointed out, if it were sold under the slogan "neutral alcohol" very few people would be tempted to buy it. So what stands out commercially today is its purity, "absolute" as one well-known brand refers to it. It is this absence of flavour that makes it the perfect ingredient in cocktails, for the inclusion of alcohol without any added flavour.
Cocktails and mixed drinks with Vodka
There are many, many possible combinations due to its neutral taste, which allow a certain degree of alcohol to be added to the mix without changing its aroma or flavour. For example:
- Screwdriver: vodka, orange juice and ice.
- Cosmopolitan: vodka, triple dry, cranberry juice and lemon juice
- Bloody Mary: vodka, tomato juice, tabasco, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce and ice
- Sex on the Beach: vodka, peach juice, cranberry juice, orange juice, and ice
- Caiposka: vodka, lemon, sugar and ice
- White Russian: vodka, coffee liqueur and milk
- Black Russian: vodka, coffee cream and ice
Brands of Vodka
These are the best and most famous brands of Vodka (and rightly so):
- Absolut
- Beluga
- Belvedere
- Crystal Head
- Eristoff
- Grey Goose
- Smirnoff
- Stolichnaya
Curiosities about Vodka
It is worth noting that in Eastern countries, the term 'vodka' is used to designate any high-proof drink, similar to what the word 'spirit' might be in English.
It is widely believed that the standard for Russian vodka was set by Mendeleev in his doctoral thesis, who is supposed to have considered 38% alcohol the ideal proportion and rounded up to 40% to facilitate the calculation of alcohol taxes. The reality, as almost always, is somewhat more mundane: it was the Russian government itself that set it earlier, in 1843, when Mendeleev was still a child.
It is also curious that during the Second World War it was popularised as "white whisky", a particular but not very accurate name, since the taste of one and the other is diametrically opposed, even though their alcohol content is similar.
