Why buy Discontinued Whiskey John Walker & Sons 200th Anniversary Celebratory Blend Limited Edition

This rich and complex Blend has been created to commemorate 200 years of Johnnie Walker's grocery shop in 1960.

Have you ever stopped to think about how a Blend Scotch is made? In Johnnie Walker that process is considered an art. Many are the factors that influence the final result of a whisky, the type of grain, the time of maturation, or the shape of the still, for example. It all starts with the grain, the starch it contains is converted to soluble sugar in order to make alcohol, this happens through the process of germination, hot water is added and the mixture rises its temperature until the grain believes it is time to grow.

To stop this growth it is dried using an oven, the peat smoke is sometimes used to help with the drying and to give flavour, just afterwards, when it is dry, it is passed through a mill so that it can be mixed with water afterwards. The next step is to mix the hot water to extract the soluble sugars, then the hot, sweet liquid obtained is extracted to cool, then the yeast is added and fermentation begins until a beer-like liquid results, which is then distilled twice to decrease the percentage of water and increase the concentration of alcohol and flavour.

Distillation consists of boiling the liquid in a large container called a still, which is usually made of copper. What is obtained is then transferred to oak barrels where it will remain for a minimum period of three years. Today, Johnnie Walker is the brand that produces the most Scotch-type whisky in the world.

Tasting notes. Sight, smell and taste

This blend is a sensory journey, with notes of dried sweet sultanas and subtle spices, as well as a touch of toasted nuts and soft peat. Pleasant peppery finish.

Pairing. How to taste it

As for the way to take it, a very good option would be to enjoy it just to be able to appreciate all its aromas and nuances. Or if you prefer, you can also take it "On the rocks".

Johnnie Walker, the young entrepreneur

In 1819, the young John Walker had just lost his father, but these were difficult times and he could not let himself be carried away by sadness and grief, he had to move on. After selling the family farm, John set up his own business, a grocery shop in the village of Kilmarnock, where he began to mix different single malts in search of a more consistent whisky than that offered in other shops in the area.

In 1857 John died leaving his son Alexander a flourishing business. With the arrival of the railway to Great Britain, a new door was opened for the business to other corners of the world, and Alexander knew how to take advantage of it. In 1867 he launched the first Johnnie Walker commercial blend, under the name of "Old Highland Whisky" and carried out exports by ship to different places, with the captains of the ships becoming commercial agents for his brand. Soon after his blend could be found anywhere in the world, as a good marketing strategy, Alexander decided to place his labels at an angle, exactly 20 degrees, so that the Johnnie Walker bottle could be easily identified.

In 1889 the business was taken over by Alexander's sons, Alexander II and George, a master blender and a master in business. A few years later, his successful varieties of Johnnie Walker Red Label and Johnnie Walker Black Label were born. By 1920, Johnnie Walker's whisky could be found in up to 120 countries. King George V gave John Walker & Sons a Royal Guarantee to be supplied by them to the Royal House. At the end of the 20th century, Johnnie Walker Red Label and Johnnie Walker Black Label were joined by Johnnie Walker Blue Label, an award-winning variety. Today, Johnnie Walker can be said to be the largest whisky brand in the world.
