Tonic, the essential refreshment
There is a phrase that dictates that, if this or that thing did not exist, it would have to be invented. There are many of these sentences that are exaggerated, and that are used indiscriminately without stopping to think that perhaps this product does not deserve such a resounding affirmation. But there are also other situations in which the phrase comes like a ring to the finger, and that is where we find ourselves. If the tonic did not exist, it would have to be invented. And we do not believe that anyone dares to refute us.
Why do we launch such a categorical phrase? Because, friends, the tonic is the essential refreshment. In the first place, because of its slightly bitter taste, the fruit of the quinine transported inside, together with a touch of sweetness and acid coming from the sugar and citrus fruits that complete the preparation. Secondly, because this combination makes the tonic one of the most appreciated soft drinks also for its digestive properties, ideal for lowering a copious lunch or dinner. And thirdly, in addition, the tonic is also the ideal accompaniment to gin, forming a symbiosis between the two that has been dazzling the senses of consumers around the world for centuries.
Composition of the tonic
It all started with carbonated water and quinine. These were the two components that together gave birth to a carbonated soft drink that eventually became known as tonic. And what is quinine? You don't have to look around, we'll tell you. It is a compound obtained from the quinine tree, whose origins are believed to be in the jungles of Peru and its surroundings. With countless properties, including antipyretic, antimalarial and analgesic, this is responsible for the bitterness that characterizes the tonic.
Subsequently, in order to reduce this bitter taste, the amount was reduced in the composition, adding sugar and citrus fruits, finally arriving at the recipe that we consume in a majority way today.
But there is not only neutral tonic in the world, so currently we find in the market two varieties of tonic:
- Neutral
- Flavored
Tonic Brands
These two varieties that we find in markets around the world are the responsibility of a huge number of brands, but from Yo pongo el hielo we wanted to narrow the search and stay a few that have managed to fall in love with our palates:
- Nordic
- Schweppes
- Fever-Tree

History of the tonic
As it happens with most drinks, around the tonic circulate several legends about its origin, the most widespread being that which dictates that it was born in Peru when a lightning struck the quina tree, falling on a lake where the natives took water to drink.
However, according to what we know, the current tonic has its birth in 1783 in Geneva, when a German watchmaker named Jacob Schweppes invented a carbonated water that began to be marketed as a medicinal product. With the passage of time, its taste was accepted by the whole society, improving its recipe and adding new ingredients by his successors until arriving at the great variety of tonic that we have today.
