Why buy Absinthe Le Diable Noir

Absinthe Le Diable Noir is a drink shrouded in mysticism. It is well known for its characteristic colour, its high alcohol content and its ability to inspire and drive you mad in equal parts. It is easy to enjoy it in shots or following the traditional ritual - dare you!

It has a slightly bitter taste, and the addition of water does not cause any action as it contains only a small amount of aniseed.
Le Diable Noir is the French word for Black Devil, that is why the label shows a black devil.

Tasting notes. Sight, smell and taste

Artemisia absinthium is the defining ingredient of absinthe, and is a member of the large asteraceae family, which includes daisies and sunflowers. Through its associations with absinthe, Artemisia absinthium has a certain mystique; it is actually a close relative of the popular tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus). Commonly known as Wormwood Artemisia absinthium was historically used to make vermouth, the flavoured wine to which it gave its name.

Other botanicals such as anise and fennel are also included in the mix, giving Absinthe its distinctive flavour. Since there are very few rules governing the production of Absinthe, the list of potential ingredients is very broad. The exact combination of herbs used depends on the producer and in some cases may vary from batch to batch.

Pairing. How to taste it

Le Diable Noir Absinthe can be drunk as a shot like any other liqueur or follow its own ritual, serving it in a glass, with one part liqueur and two to four parts cold water. Pour the water into the glass through a perforated spoon with a sugar cube on top, so that the sugar is diluted by the water. Some more daring drinkers set fire to the sugar cube impregnated in the absinthe.

A little bit of history about Absinthe Diable Noir...

Absinthe, symbolising the Parisian bohemian movement of the late 19th century, has a complex and controversial history. The birthplace of modern absinthe, as we know it today, is the Val de Travers, a valley just west of Lake Neuchâtel, western Switzerland. Although the exact origins of the drink are difficult to pinpoint, there is evidence that Artemisia absinthium was used to make drinks in Egypt and Greece in 1500 BC.

The psychoactive properties that have made absinthe so famous and infamous have been widely exaggerated by both its detractors and its advocates. Famous artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec did much to raise the profile of absinthe, as did the writer and poet Oscar Wilde.
