Why buy Discontinued Rum Occidens
Occidens is a very particular rum, as it is produced in the last agricultural plantation in Europe, in the Granada town of Motril. Furthermore, its supreme quality has led it to win the Gold Medal at the International Rum Conference in Miami 2019. With such a historical legacy, it is unique in its species.
In Motril (Granada) the last remaining sugar cane plantation on the European continent survives, and it was the first one more than 1,000 years ago, which has been cultivated without interruption. In recent years, the company has been conserving and replanting the historical cane varieties, with which it makes Occidens agricultural rum.
Agricultural Rum
Agricultural rum is the distillate obtained directly from the juice of the cane, so that a more elegant and vegetable-based liquor is obtained, ideal qualities for ageing. Unlike the industrial rum made from molasses, a process is avoided in the production that also enhances the vegetable memory of the harvest in the final distillate.
Varieties of Cane
The traditional historical varieties of Granada, Almil and Blanquilla, are used to make Occidens rum.
Aging
Agricultural rum is aged in static maturation in different types of barrels, among which those that have aged pedro Ximénez, sherry and La Rioja white wines stand out. Each barrel gives the rum a distinctive colour, aroma and flavour.
Tasting notes. Sight, smell and taste
To the eye it has a bright amber colour with coppery reflections, in the nose the first impression is the iodised marine notes that give way to a floral explosion in which they appear in a discreet way, touches of dried orange peel, dried fruits and spices. Once in the mouth, the marine and floral notes reappear with a slight toast. Deep and intense fruity aftertaste with nuances of the ageing that give prominence to the rum and not to the ageing.
Pairing. How to taste it
In Yo pongo el hielo we think that the best way to taste it is alone or, if we prefer, with ice.

A little bit of history about Occidens...
For 1200 years sugar cane has been cultivated without interruption in the municipalities of Motril and Salobreña in Granada. The Arabs introduced it from Egypt in 745 to this southern Spanish enclave which, due to its special, almost tropical, climate, became the first and now the last sugarcane harvest in Europe. Christopher Columbus brought sugar cane from this area to America on his second voyage in 1493, where it has been widely grown for the past 500 years.
