Why buy Brandy Veterano

The one with the bull. The one that travels all over Spain, from north to south, giving off flavour. The one of all the life: Veterano, your Brandy of always.

On Spanish roads, drivers have been constantly watched by an imposing 14-metre high bull for decades. Distributed through several areas of the country, its origin dates back to 1958 and the person responsible for its birth is named Osborne, the winery that also contributes its nomenclature to the Osborne Bull, the protagonist of our history. But what brand is "guilty" of this Spanish image? None other than Brandy Veterano, one of our country's iconic drinks.

You have to go back to 1922 to guess the first steps of this national brandy. To speak of Veterano is to speak of one of the most characteristic Brandy de Jerez in the world. It all begins with the cultivation of the vine and its subsequent harvesting to produce young, fruity wines suitable for consumption. These wines, instead of being bottled and marketed after fermentation and maturation, undergo a new process, that of distillation in copper stills or distillation columns, and then mature in American oak barrels or casks which have previously held sherry wine. At this point, the process known as Criaderas and Soleras is carried out, consisting of three heights, where the youngest spirits are found in the upper one and the oldest ones in the lower one, filling the lower part as it is emptied for consumption.

Tasting notes. Sight, smell and taste

A 1 litre Bordeaux-type bottle, with the Osborne Bull as its eternal watchman, is the guardian of the essences hidden in the glass container. Once poured into the glass, Veterano is dark amber in colour, with bright, shiny mahogany flashes. Powerful aromas of raisins and oak wood escape from it and harmoniously enter the nose. Finally, in the mouth it is persistent, smooth and elegant.

Pairing. How to taste it

As for the best way to taste it, from I put the ice we recommend to do it in a traditional ball glass, of average size, and to a temperature of between 12 and 15 degrees maximum, ideal state to appreciate all the shades that it contributes. However, Veterano also goes very well with two or three pieces of ice, or even in the form of a shot. As far as pairing is concerned, we believe that, although there are several products with which it can be perfectly combined, strong cheeses and dark chocolate come in handy.

More than two centuries of history

The 18th century was the origin of one of the most important brands in our country: Osborne. At that time, an English merchant named Thomas Osborne Mann arrived in Cádiz to do wine business in the area. Shortly afterwards, he became attached to the area, and specifically to Puerto de Santa María, where he acquired several wineries and began to shape an empire that he would name Osborne, which since 1958 has been linked to brave bull and Brandy Veterano.

Favourite nightcap

I'd take Spanish brandy before any of the posher versions from across Europe or the US. For me, this ticks all the boxes and takes a lot of beating for taste, flavour, etc. It's worth noting that it is 30% as opposed to the 40% we're used to in the UK but you'd have to read the bottle to become aware as it doesn't taste any different and, hey, it comes in litre-sized portions to compensate!
