Brandy is a world-famous drink, we've always heard it. Such is the fame of this spirit that it covers a wide range of people, from your uncle at Christmas to your friends after coffee. But do you really know what it is? Do you know the difference between aguardiente and liqueur?

To get to know it better, let's first see where it comes from.

Although its origin is not entirely clear, the strongest theory is that it emerged in Europe in the early 15th century as a curative remedy.

The first to refer to the "water of life" was the physician Arnau de Vilanova, who claimed that aguardiente protected against the plague, cheered your heart and cured paralysis. It flooded hard times with joy and kept you out of trouble.

Later, brandy went from being a healing substance to being used for social purposes, as people realised that its effect was quicker than that of wine. Today it is a popular drink worldwide, in fact, it is the most common drink in Colombia. Moreover, it is perfect for celebrations and special occasions.

What is aguardiente? Differences between aguardiente and liquor.

The famous aguardiente is the result of the distillation of a previously fermented material, such as cereals, fruits, etc. What characterises this drink is that it is pure, i.e. it is not altered by adding other products.

Here is an example: if we want an apple-flavoured spirit, the apple will be distilled to give us the pure flavours. In the case of liqueur, to make it, syrups and aromas are added to a previously distilled spirit to give the desired flavours to the mixture.

Another difference is that while liqueur, to be considered as such, must have added sugar, aguardiente remains unsweetened. Due to its later added ingredients, liqueur can have different colours and textures, while eau-de-vie is always transparent due to its purity.

At first glance, it may seem complicated to define aguardiente, but with these keys, you will be able to tell everyone what it is. Show what you know, we know you like it ;p
