Chartreuse Difusion SL
Country:
Spain
Opening:
1991

From the Western French Alps comes the exquisite herbal liqueur Chartreuse, a name derived from the Carthusian Order (Ordre des Chartreux) and a taste and aroma likened to swallowing the rainbow in the novel Return to Brideshead, "It's like swallowing a spectrum of light" and "like Christmas in a glass" by the renowned Baltimore bartender, Brendan Finnerty.

It's not every day that we come across a liqueur whose main ingredients include 130 different herbs and flowers that come from a long and careful infusion where they are distilled several times and aged in oak barrels. And as if this were not enough to make it surprising, the complete recipe for its production has been a carefully guarded secret since its beginnings and is currently only known in its entirety by two monks of the Carthusian Order of the Carthusians.

History

The monks of the Carthusian Order lead a life marked by austerity and the constant search for spiritual elevation, and have maintained their customs since their foundation in 1084. As the story goes, around 1605, they received an ancient manuscript in which an alchemist left them a recipe for a medicinal tonic containing 130 herbs and plants that was considered the "Elixir for long life". They carefully studied this recipe and refined it year by year, until in 1764 they obtained a potent vegetable elixir that they took to different cities and nearby towns.

After this successful experience, in 1840 they produced a milder tasting version with an alcohol content of 55%, now known as green Chartreuse, and a sweeter version with 40% alcohol content, yellow Chartreuse. Both versions are considered to be highly sought after ingredients for cocktails.
