History
The Glenfiddich distillery was founded in 1886 by William Grant in Dufftown, in the valley of Robbie Dhu, Scotland. The first drop of whiskey Glendfiddich left the distillery on Christmas Day 1887.
After the hard times of the 1960s and 1970s, many small independent distillers were bought or went out of business. To survive, William Grant & Sons expanded its beverage production and introduced advertising campaigns, a visitor center and from 1957 Scotch whiskey was bottled in its distinctive triangular bottles.
Later, William Grant & Sons was one of the first companies to package their bottles in tubes and gift tins. He was one of the first to recognize the importance of duty-free shops for spirits. This marketing strategy was a success, and Glenfiddich has become the biggest selling single malt in the world. It is sold in 180 countries, representing 35% of global sales of single malt.
