Bourbon

Do you know the difference between a Bourbon and a Blended Scotch Whisky?

There are many of us who do not manage to distinguish the difference because, in reality, it is not so obvious and we only focus on the geographical factor, because one is produced in the United States and the other in Scotland, but there is much more behind this story because the most important differentiating point is found in the production process, in which the percentage of corn grains, the barrels where they are aged, the alcohol content and even the country where it is made must be taken into account.

For a whisky to be considered Bourbon, it must have been made with at least 51% corn, which is the ingredient that gives it its characteristic sweet, caramel flavour. It is aged in new charred oak barrels for a minimum of two years, and it is important to mention that these barrels must not contain any additives or colouring because they are a fundamental element in achieving the characteristic mature flavour of a Bourbon. As for the alcohol content, to achieve the right alcohol content during bottling, only water is added to the Bourbon and it must be at least 40o.

Bourbon can be drunk neat, diluted with water or with a few ice cubes. It is also ideal for preparing different types of cocktails, among the best known are: Mint Julep, Egg-nogs, Fizzes and many more.

Bourbon History

Let's take a trip back through American history to learn some details about the creation of one of the world's most renowned distillates. It was in 1789, when the Reverend Elijah Craig opened the first distillery in Fayette County, Kentucky and offered for sale a distilled whiskey made from corn, malt and rye that had an exquisite and characteristic caramel flavour, which was called Bourbon.

This novel liquor quickly gained favour throughout the American nation as it celebrated its independence and both Fayette and Bourbon counties began to produce it on a large scale.

But, why the name Bourbon? It is very simple, because both Kentucky counties (Lafayette and Bourbon) were inspired by the same historical figure who fought alongside great characters such as George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson to achieve American Independence; he was Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de Lafayette, a French aristocrat who was related to the House of Bourbon and as a gesture of gratitude to him and to the French government for their help during the American Revolution it was decided to call it so.

Elaboration Process

In this section we invite you to learn the most important details of the Bourbon making process.

      1. The process begins with the harvesting of corn, rye, wheat and barley to grind them into grit before moving on to the cooking process.

      2. After adding water and boiling, the mixture obtained is allowed to cool and then the yeast is added with a small amount of the previously distilled mixture.

      3. The sugar present in the mixture feeds the yeast to produce alcohol and when it is completely fermented it distils and creates a vapour rich in alcohol. The vapour is then re-concentrated into            a very clear liquid called "White Whiskey".

      4. The casks are charred over an open fire to give the Bourbon its characteristic colour and flavour. The freshly distilled spirit is poured in to bring the natural sugars in the oak to the surface and            allow the new whiskey to penetrate deeply and gain the flavour of the oak.

      5. In the final step, the Bourbon's maturation process will depend on the characteristics of the cellar (location, shape, size, temperature, ventilation), but it cannot be  aged for less than five                  years.
