Blended Whisky

The so well known and preferred by millions, Blended Whisky is the result of the perfect combination of malt and barley whiskies. In some cases, more than 40 different Scotch whiskies with a minimum age of 12 years are blended to obtain a drink full of splendid nuances that give it an exquisite flavour and aroma.

Blended whisky is the most widespread variety on the market because it is the result of the blends made by the different master distillers, achieving combinations of aromas and flavours that are difficult to find in an unblended whisky. Between the two forms of blending we have the first, which consists of blending the distillates before bottling, and the second, in which whiskies from different casks are blended in a cask or cask before bottling. It is important to mention that blended whisky is not considered to be a whisky that comes from a distillate that was not blended with any other distillate or whisky before bottling.

History of Blended Whisky

As the story goes, in 1853, the Glenlivet distillery was the first to make a blended whisky in Scotland. They experimented with blending different malt and grain whiskies, revolutionising whisky lovers, lowering production costs and making it more adaptable to the tastes of consumers.

The exact amount to make the mixture of the distillates or whiskies depends solely on each manufacturer and the master distillers who are in charge of the meticulous work of elaboration, since this process is much more complicated than the rest of whiskies, but what they can not fail to take into account is that a Blended Whisky must carry, compulsorily, two types of grains, commonly malt and the mixture of others.

If you are finding the history of blended whisky interesting, we invite you to learn a little more about the production process in the following section.

Production Process

In this section we invite you to get to know the most important details of the Blended Whisky production process.

  1. The process begins with the careful selection of the grains to be processed. We will select the common grains (barley, corn or wheat) and the malt grains. The amount of malt grains should be between 7 and 15 times more than the regular grains, depending on the type of Blended Whisky to be made.
  2. Now it is time to grind all the selected grains and mix them with water for fermentation and distillation. Some distilleries use spring water to bring a high purity to the drink.
  3. Then we come to the last step of this process, in which we put the liquid obtained by mixing the ground grains with water into oak casks. This mixture will remain in the barrels for at least 3 continuous years.

Important facts you should know...

  • Whiskies do not mature while they are in the bottle, only when they are in the cask, so the age of a whisky should be considered between the distillation process and bottling.
  • Whiskies that spend many years in the bottle tend to be more valuable, although they are not necessarily better or older than a whisky matured in cask for a similar length of time.
  • Premium whiskies are made using the most unique casks available, which are carefully selected and chosen for their character, flavour, high quality and ageability.

Types of Blended Whisky

The following are the best known and most widely consumed types of blended whisky:

Blended Scotch Whisky

Blended whiskies, which are made in Scotland, typically use malt whisky in their blends. They are whiskies that maintain the body and complexity so that some of them have a preponderant presence of peat and cask aromas.

It is also important to note that, in Scotland, they are somewhat permissive with the production of blended whiskies, allowing manufacturers to add caramel and colouring to their blends.

Japanese Blended Whisky

Japanese blended whiskies have become a favourite and highly sought after by whisky lovers. They have conquered the palates thanks to their fine and delicate flavours that are the result of the perfection in the combination and blending of their whiskies.

Nowadays, it has become very common for Japanese whiskies to win gold medals in various international competitions.

Irish Blended Whiskies

These whiskies are light flavoured, smooth and with vegetal overtones. Peat smoking is rare in these whiskies, so they have a fresher, more floral feel on the palate.

American Blended Whisky

American blended whiskies are blended with at least 20% straight whisky and the types of grains used are native to the country. These include: rye, barley, wheat, etc.

Canadian Blended Whisky

Blended whiskies are a Canadian speciality, usually containing a significant proportion of whisky that has been aged for at least 3 years. The regulations that exist in Canada regarding the distillation and ageing process are more flexible than in countries such as Ireland and Scotland, but they are still very serious and rigorous in most aspects, as they seek to strengthen the appreciation of the flavour and aroma of Canadian whisky throughout the world.
