History

Appleton Estate is located in the country of Jamaica, more specifically in the heart of Cockpit Country, a beautiful valley surrounded by limestone hills formed as a result of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

In the Nassau Valley, located behind the hills of Cockpit Country, are the 4,000 hectares of sugar cane that cover 95% of the distillery's production, with the remaining 5% purchased from small farmers in the area.

At Appleton, 10 different types of cane are used that are not genetically modified, and at the end of the harvest, which takes place between January and April, the cane is processed and the molasses is taken to the distillery for fermentation along with Appleton's exclusive yeasts. At this point the first distillation in copper crucibles and the second distillation in steel stills begins.

In 1907 Appleton Estate is acquired by J. Wray & Nephew, and from that moment on became the parent company of Appleton and its sister company Lascelles Ltd.

Interesting facts

The brand of Appleton Estate rums has among its range one of the 10 most expensive rums in the world, we talk about the "Appleton Estate 50 Years Jamaica Independence Reserve" a rum that has aged in barrels for 50 years being, officially, the oldest rum in the world.
In 1962, while Jamaica was fighting for its total independence, a series of barrels were set aside to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the distillery, which is why this rum came on the market in 2012 at a price of no less than 5,000 euros.
