History

To learn about the history of Magners you must move to the small town of Clonmel, located in the southeast of the island of Ireland and belonging to County Tipperary. There, 14 years after the extinction of the region of Southern Ireland, an Irish dreamer settles down to seek his fortune and build an empire, although at that time he did not know yet how successful his idea would be over the years. We are in the year 1935.

William Magner is the name of our protagonist, an expert in cider making who wanted to show his gifts to the rest of the country. Thus, Magner bought his orchard from a man named Phelan, installed his factory in the former brewery owned by Thomas Murphy, a local neighbor, and began to make his exquisite delicacy from the best apples in the county and a special yeast that has been contributing its touch to Magners ever since that year. Such is its success that only two years later it established an alliance with the English cider company H.P Bulmer & Co., through which it acquired the Bulmers brand in Ireland, bottling under that name and, in compensation, giving 50% of its property to the British cider maker.

Almost a decade later, the English company finally bought 100% of Magners, and was renamed Bulmers Ltd Clonmel. However, a dispute with a rival cider maker put an end to the plans. In 1960 Bulmers launched Champagne Perry on the market, a type of pear cider very common in Ireland but which the Babycham company saw as direct competition, a vision that the courts agreed to by forcing the former to sell Magner's company to the latter, although Magner maintained Bulmers' licence in Ireland. Fortunately, however, this setback did not bring about the end of cider, but continued to add to its flavour until it conquered much of the world today.

Magners Light Cider

In 2004 Magners reached the heart of all those consumers who seek maximum flavour with minimum calorie consumption. For this reason, the Irish brand launched its light version on the market, a product that maintained the essence of cider born in 1935 but reduced the amount of calories to a minimum.

Magners Pear cider

As we said before, in 1960 Bulmers Ltd Colnmer lost its Magners company in court for marketing a pear cider that a court considered to be unfair competition with a rival company. However, the Irish cider maker did not cease to offer a pear product, and that is why in 2011 it presented its pear variety, known as Magners Pear.

Magners Berry Cider

In 2010 Magners presented a new version of its original recipe. In it, his 17 varieties of apple still appeared, but accompanied by blackcurrants, raspberries and strawberries.

Logo and campaigns

A gold-coloured label with the type of drink, origin and a text with the brand name is the logo that the Irish company wears in all corners of the world. Magners has also come a long way in the world of advertising. It has sponsored the Rugby League from the 2005/2006 season to the 2010/2011 season, Dundee FC and Celtic FC, the Glasgow International Comedy Festival and the Cheltenham Gold Cup, a horse race that will bear Magners' name until 2022.

Interesting facts

The pear cider dispute had the above-mentioned consequences for Magners, which are still reflected in the marketing of the drink today. Thus, Irish apple cider is known in two different ways depending on where in the world it is drunk: Bulmers in Ireland, and Magners in the rest of the world. Keep this in mind when you buy it, because if you buy Bulmers you are consuming the English drink and not the Irish one.

Magners is a brand of cider. Its references in Cider are highly valued in the sector for their high level of quality in production and its fame among the public is well deserved.
