National Beer, a Drink With a History
Do you know the history of the origin of beer in our country? Here are some important facts that could explain the arrival of this drink in our territory, its expansion and growth until it became one of the main and favourite beverages of all consumers.
One of the oldest finds of beer (3,000 BC) was a ceramic vessel with traces of this drink and some mills with signs of malted cereal found in the Can Sadurní Cave in Barcelona.
By the 12th century, beer was much better known and was mainly used as a food supplement for the sick and travellers staying in hostels and hospitals.
In the year 1100 we find references to hops for the first time. It was recognised as a plant that was good for your health and helped to keep any type of beverage in optimum condition.
Emperor Charles V, who was a great fan of beer, introduced a court of master brewers in 1517 and it was this action that made this drink gain more strength in consumption in Spain.
At the end of the 16th century, the first breweries were set up in Madrid, making progress at the end of the 19th century and ensuring a constant and permanent growth until the present day. However, it is important to mention that during the Civil War and the early post-war years, this growth suffered a significant stagnation due to the country's precarious economic situation and the difficulties in finding and acquiring the raw materials and machinery necessary for the production of the product.
Currently, the Spanish beer market is among the top 10 world producers of this beverage and is facing its best moment, both for the large breweries and for craft breweries, which have managed to develop beers of all kinds: American Pale Ales, IPAs, Lagers, Imperial Stouts, Barley Wines, among others, with flavours and aromas never seen before.
National Beer, Four Family Stories
In Spain, there are four of the largest brewing companies that control 93% of the country's beer production. These four companies belong to families who, thanks to the work and dedication of generations, have achieved the success they enjoy today.
Mahou
Mahou is the leader in beer production in Spain. Its founder was Casimiro Mahou and they currently have more than 43 brands of beer. It is the brewing company with the highest annual turnover in the country and has achieved its expansion and growth by acquiring other breweries such as: San Miguel, Alhambra, Cervezas Anaga, among others.
Cruzcampo - Heineken
The Dutch Carvalho-Heineken family bought the Sevillian brewery Cruzcampo in 2000, a brewing dynasty with more than 150 years of history in our country. It is currently the second largest producer in Spain, with an annual turnover of more than 1,142 million euros.
Damm
This company has 25.6% of Spanish beer production. It has brands such as: Estrella Damm, Voll-Damm, Xibeca, Victoria, Estrella Sur, among others with a turnover of more than 950 million euros.
Estrella Galicia
This company represents 7.4% of total production in Spain. It has managed to expand its borders with subsidiaries in Brazil (Sao Paulo), USA (Virginia), China (Shanghai), Philippines (Manila) and Japan (Tokyo). Its annual turnover amounts to 470 million euros. Currently, the fourth generation is at the helm of the Hijos de Rivera Corporation.
